In 1947 Alfred Wetherell was a crippled Ex Ironstone Miner who decided if he was to support his family he had to get on the road to self sufficiency. He started with a grocery shop in Saltburn in 1947 and in 1949 he started an estate agency business which was to prosper for 40 years before being purchased by Reed Raines. In 1958 son Kenneth persuaded his farther to open their first furniture store which opened on 28th March 1958. It started as a small corner shop in Redcar. ![]() The Business prospered and in 1960 “Wetherells” purchased a property in Westgate Guisborough and opened its second store, Meanwhile in Redcar the company had premises on the high street and in 1982 moved to the present showroom in West Terrace in Redcar, 50 yards from the town clock. During the ensuing years Kenneth took over the furniture business and his brother Harry took over the estate agency. Kenneth and his wife hazel managed “Wetherell Furnisher” and in due course were joined by their son David and then their daughter Linda. With the passing of time Alfred and his wife Mary passed away and Kenneth retired on his 65th Birthday leaving the business to be managed by David and Linda whilst Hazel still loves to work and frequents the Redcar store most days. Modern retailing is a far cry from 1958 when Kenneth Wetherell had a Transit Van and sold furniture by day and delivered it by night. Remembering a “3 piece bedroom suite” at £39.00, a bed at £9.00, and the “Special” lounge suite of the month always £75.00. While David and Linda work hard at making the business successful, they do have outside interest, David has 3 children and is a keen Go Cart Racing enthusiast, Linda on the other hand loves farming and eventing her Horses. “Wetherells” has now been established for 49 years and managed by a third generation who offer upto “3 Years Interest Free Credit” on very competitive prices on Suites, Beds, Bedroom Furniture, Dining Room Furniture etc plus “Free Local Delivery”.
